National Pork Producers Council - Manager of Industry Outreach

The Manager of Industry Outreach is primarily responsible for coordinationd of and assiting in the the delivery of pork industry messages and successes of NPPC activities to NPPC investors; State Associations, Producers, Alliance, Packer Processors, and critical food chain audiences.

Essential job functions include: The Manager will be working with other departments within NPPC Des Moines and Washington DC office as well as other industry associations — identifying key needs and messages that require support and engagement. The manager will be primarily responsible for developing and deploying a broad range of information pieces to assist with NPPC’s member outreach on issues management, education, and policy initiatives. This position requires strong and persuasive verbal and written communication skills, and demonstrated effective public speaking and marketing skills. Ideally the candidate should have background in agriculture or have worked in an agricultural marketing/communication position.


Education: Equivalent of a Bachelor of Science degree in a related discipline such as animal science, agriculture business, marketing or communications.

Skills: Proven track record of strong and persuasive verbal and written communication skills. A demonstrated ability and interest in being part of a team-based management approach. Ability to effect seamless integration of multiple initiatives and exemplified ability to handle challenging situations. A demonstrated ability to take calculated risks and a proven track record of critical listening skills along with creative problem-solving abilities. Ability to work one-on-one with others in the association and within the industry. Strong collaboration and communication skills with diverse groups are necessary. Ability to persuade others to embrace new concepts is desired. Ability to plan, develop and implement communication strategies and plans for various projects being developed by executive team. Prior experience is developing marketing material.

Relevant Experience: At least two years professional experience in communication/marketing, preferably in the ag/food industry. Emphasis on experience with influencing change, promoting new ideas, and establishing and improving relationships. Prior experience is developing marketing material . Effiecient in the use of software applications; PowerPoint, WordPress, Adobe Create, Visio, PageMaker, Survey Monkey, Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin.


Membership: Communicates and interacts with state associations, pork producers, packers/processors, and allied industry as necessary and appropriate to position responsibilities.

Governing Structure: Interacts with and presents reports to the Vice President of Industry Relations, the NPPC Management Team, and the NPPC Board of Directors, as required.

Public: Interacts with opinion leader professionals within the pork industry as well as affiliated organizations as directed.

Other Organizations: Position will maintain regular communication with other agricultural, food and meat associations. Expected to take active role in any relevant professional organizations beneficial to the industry.


Policy Formulation: Responsible for effective communication of NPPC’s industry messages, including issues management, education, and policy initiatives. Reports to Vice President of Industry Relations.

Planning: Will assist the Vice President of Industry Relations in developing strategies and tactics to achieve the goals identified within the organization’s business plan. Keeps staff and management informed of industry issues and producer and state association needs.

Decision Authority: Has specific decision-making authority over specific project and task force work, as assigned.

Financial Responsibility: Budget authority for assigned project and task force work, and key line items within the NPPC Chain Relations Budget.

Travel: Requires some domestic travel. Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Location: The position is based out of NPPC Urbandale, IA office.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions - Requires light physical effort such as stooping and bending, and occasional lifting of lightweight objects (up to 25 pounds).
